The Lost Coin

Luke 15:8-10

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too.

The Bible tells us many things. It tells us about God’s Son, Jesus. Many people listened to Jesus tell special teaching stories, called parables.

Jesus told one story about a woman who had TEN coins.

Yes! She had TEN coins. Let’s count them: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Wait a minute! Where’s number ten?

The woman counted again: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine . . . No number ten! The woman decided to look for the missing coin.

She lit a lamp. Look, look, look. But, she couldn’t find the coin.

She swept the floor. Then, she looked, and looked and looked...

There it is! The woman found her coin after searching and searching! Let's count them: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten!

She was SO excited when she found it that she told all of her friends and neighbors and said, "Celebrate with me! I found my lost coin!"

Jesus told this story because He wanted us to know that just like the coin was special to the woman. WE are special to God!

Bible Paraphrase: Nothing at all can ever separate us from God’s love. — Romans 8:39, NIrV

Text Truth: God loves me, and I am special to Him.

Family Devotional

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” — Luke 15:8-10

We heard a story about a woman who lost one of her coins. What did the woman do when she lost her coin? She looked and looked and looked until she found it. The coin must have been very special to her!

Jesus told this story because He wants us to know that we are special to God. God loves us and wants us to always be with Him. And nothing, NOTHING, can ever separate us from God’s love.

Nothing at all can ever separate us from God’s love. — Romans 8:39, NIrV

With your family, write down things that are special about you all. You already know you are special to God, simply because He made you and loves you. That is the most special thing about you! But you also have other things about you that are pretty special. Maybe it’s the way you sing or run or draw. Maybe you have a special freckle or laugh. We are all special!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, acknowledge to God that sometimes you forget how special you are to Him. Thank God for reminding you that you are special. Thank God for (read through your family's list, saying each family member and what is special about them). Ask God's help to always remember that God made you and loves you, and that makes you pretty special! Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for him.
