Moses in the Basket

Exodus 1:22–2:10

Our true Bible story comes from a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

We begin in a place called Egypt with a mommy and her little baby boy. This mommy loved her baby boy and took very good care of him. His name was Moses.

But there was a problem. One very big problem! There was a really mean pharaoh in charge of all of Egypt. The pharaoh is like a king, and this king made a VERY bad rule. He said that all baby boys like Moses had to be taken away from their families!

Of course, baby Moses’ mom did not want her baby to be taken away from her. But she knew God would take care of him. She trusted that God’s got it.

So, this is what Moses’ mommy did. First, she made a special basket.

Then, she gently laid baby Moses in the basket.

After Moses’ mom laid him in the basket, she took the basket to the river and hid him in the tall grass. Moses’ big sister, Miriam, stayed to watch and see what would happen to baby Moses.

Moses’ big sister watched, and she watched, and she watched. Then she saw something! It was the princess of Egypt! She heard baby Moses crying and sent her helper to get the basket.

When they opened the basket, they saw baby Moses, and the princess wanted to help him.

Just then, Moses’ big sister, Miriam, walked up. She asked the princess if she needed someone to help her take care of the baby.

The princess said, "Yes!" So, Miriam ran to get someone. Can you guess who she brought to help? It was Moses’ mommy! Moses’ mommy got to take care of her sweet baby Moses again, and the princess would protect them and keep them safe from the mean pharaoh’s rule.

Just like God took care of baby Moses, He will always take care of you. He’s always with you, so you don’t ever have to worry. You can trust that God’s got it!

Bible Paraphrase: God is with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:9, NLT

Text Truth: God takes care of me.

Family Devotional

Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. Exodus 2:1-5

Moses’ mommy didn’t carry him in her arms when she hid him in the tall grass. Moses’ mommy made a special basket and laid him inside it. Then, she and Moses’ big sister hid him in the tall grass by the river. Who found baby Moses in the tall grass? The Princess of Egypt. She saw baby Moses and wanted to take care of him. God was always with Moses taking care of him, because no matter what happens, God’s got it!

God is with you wherever you goJoshua 1:9, NLT

With your family, make a list of ways God takes care of you. God gives us a beautiful world to live in people to help us and love us, food to eat, clothes to wear, medicine to make us feel better. God does all kinds of things to take care of us!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, acknowledge to God that He takes care of (name the members of your family) in so many ways. Acknowledge that He (read through your family's list). Acknowledge that you should never worry, because no matter what, He's got it. Thank God for His love, and acknowledge to God your love for Him.
