Jesus Teaches at the Temple

Luke 2:41-50

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We have been talking about the true story of Christmas. Do you remember who was in the little family we were talking about? Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. BUT did you know that Jesus grew to be a child? It’s true.

Mary and Joseph took the young boy Jesus on a long trip. And some of their family and friends went with them.

They took a long trip to the city of Jerusalem and to the temple there.

A temple is like a church where people go to learn about God. Now, the temple where Jesus and His family went looked different than our church, but it was still the place where they worshipped God! Lots of people came to the temple each week, just like we come to our church. All to celebrate God!

When they were done, Mary and Joseph started the long trip home with their friends and family. Jesus wasn’t with them, but Mary and Joseph weren't worried. They thought Jesus was with His friends in their group.

As they traveled, Mary and Joseph started looking for Jesus in their group. And they asked all their friends and family, “Have you seen Jesus?” No. “Have you seen Jesus?” No. No one had seen Jesus. Mary and Joseph could not find Him!

So, Mary and Joseph said goodbye to their friends and family and they started walking back to Jerusalem and the temple. When they got to Jerusalem, they looked, and they looked, and they looked!

Finally, they found Jesus! Do you know WHERE Jesus was? He was in the temple! Do you know WHO Jesus was with? He was with a bunch of grown-ups. Do you know WHAT Jesus was doing? He was teaching the adults! All those grown-ups were listening to everything Jesus had to say. They were AMAZED by how much Jesus knew about God and by what Jesus said.

Talk about out-of-this-world amazing! Jesus, as a child, even amazed adults! That’s because Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus is amazing!

Bible Paraphrase: Everyone who heard him was amazed. — Luke 2:47, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus’ teaching is amazing.

Family Devotional

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.
Luke 2:46-47

Our Bible story was about Jesus teaching the grown-ups at the temple about God when He was only a child. That’s pretty amazing! Jesus was always doing amazing things when He lived on Earth.

Everyone who heard him was amazed.  Luke 2:47, NIV

Jesus still teaches us A LOT of things about God. Jesus teaches us that God loves us, God forgives us, God is patient with us, God is always with us, God cares about us, God made us, God can do anything, God is good, God knows our name—whew! SO many amazing things! With your family, each of you write down one thing you know about God.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God for sending Jesus to do amazing things like you about Him! Acknowledge that Jesus is God's Son, so you can trust what He says about God. Acknowledge that Jesus teaches you that...(read through your family's list). Acknowledge to God that He is SO good! Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for Him.
