The Angel and Mary

Luke 1:26-33, 38, 46-49

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. The word gospel means “good news!”

Our true story of Christmas starts when God sent an angel to announce that God would give a gift to everyone! Do you like to get gifts? I do, too! Let’s play a game called, ”Which would you rather have?” I will say two gifts, and you choose which you would rather have. Ready?

Which would you rather have, soccer ball or watercolor paints? Both are super fun gifts.

Let’s try another one. Which would you rather have, a train car or a teddy bear? Fun, right?

Now think about this. Why do we give gifts? Do we give gifts to show people we love them? Yes! Well, God loves you and me so, SO much that He gave us the most special gift ever!

It all started long ago when God sent an angel to a girl named Mary. Mary was surprised and afraid when she saw the angel.

But the angel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary. God wants you to know that you are going to have a baby! His name will be Jesus. He will be very special because . . .”

Are you ready to hear why Jesus is SO special? Jesus is special, because Jesus is God’s Son! The most special gift ever that God gave everyone was His very own Son, Jesus!

When Mary heard this amazing news, she told the angel that she would do what God wanted her to do. And that is the just the beginning of the true story of Christmas. An angel told Mary that God was giving us a very special gift, His very own Son, Jesus! Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son!

But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Luke 1:30-33

Our Bible story was about an angel who had a very important message for a girl named Mary. The angel told Mary that she would have a special baby and the baby’s name would be . . .Jesus! And why is Jesus special? Because Jesus is God’s Son!

The angel told Mary that God was giving the world a very special gift: His Son, Jesus. With your family, make a list of gifts you really hope to get for Christmas. Have each family member write down one gift they really hope to get.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God for blessing you with (name each member of your family). Thank God for Christmas and all that you get to celebrate this time of year. Thank God for things like (read through your family's list). Acknowledge that it would be fun to get all of these gifts, but ask God to help you remember that you already received the best gift ever: Jesus. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for Him.
