Calming the Storm

Matthew 8:23-27

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Our true Bible story is about someone who has the most amazing out-of-this-world power. What kind of power do you have? Do you think you could stop the sun from shining in the sky? Try. Yell, "Stop, sun, stop!" Did you stop the sun? No. You don't have the power to stop the sun.

Do you have the power to make it rain? Try. Yell, "Rain!" Did it rain? No. Do you have the power to make it rain? No. You don't have the power. But, there is someone amazing who does! Do you know who it is? Jesus!

One day, Jesus and His friends were on a boat out at sea and Jesus took a nap

All of the sudden, a huge storm came up!

It was raining, thundering, and lightning. And the boat rocked back and forth.

So, Jesus’ friends woke Him up! "Help Jesus, help!" they said.

And guess what? Jesus stood up in the boat. He looked at the wind and the waves, and He told the storm to STOP!

And the storm stopped! Jesus had the power to stop a storm.

His friends probably thought "WOOOOW!" Yes, they were amazed because Jesus, God’s Son, is out-of-this-world amazing.

Bible Paraphrase: Everyone who heard him was amazed. — Luke 2:47, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus’ power is amazing.

Family Devotional

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
—Matthew 8:23-27

Our Bible story was about Jesus telling a storm to stop . . . AND IT DID! That’s totally amazing! Everyone who saw Jesus do this was amazed.

Everyone who heard him was amazed.  —Luke 2:47, NIV

We all get scared sometimes. Strange dogs, a new babysitter, or bad storms, like the one Jesus’ friends were afraid of, can scare anyone. But guess what? We don’t have to be afraid because another amazing thing about Jesus is that He is always with us. With your family, each of you write one thing you’re afraid of.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God for sending Jesus to help you when you are afraid. "Help (family member's name) remember that Jesus is with (him/her) when (he/she) is afraid of (what family member listed). Help (family member's name) remember that Jesus is with . . ." (continue with each family member.) Acknowledge that Jesus is amazing, because He has the power to do anything! And acknowledge to God that He is the best. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for Him.
