Love One Another

John 13:34-35

Our true story is found in at part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

We are talking about the number one, the most important thing you could EVER do. The number one, most important thing is . . . to love like Jesus. Loving others like Jesus is the best thing we can do. How do we love like Jesus? Here are some stories about Jesus that will show us how.

One time, there was a man who couldn’t walk. He needed help...

...and Jesus helped him! Helping our friends is ONE way we can love like Jesus.

When a friend is sad, we can help cheer them up. If they need help learning to play a game, we can help teach them. We show others we love them when we help them!

Another time, Jesus was teaching a lot of people, and they all got hungry. But they only had two fish and five loaves of bread.

Jesus prayed and thanked God for the food, then He shared it with over 5,000 people! That’s a LOT of people.

Sharing with our friends is another way we can love like Jesus. If we have an awesome snack, we can share it. If someone wants to play with our toys, we can give them a turn. We can show others we love them when we share with them.

Here is one more story about Jesus. One time, some people brought a woman to Jesus and said mean words about her.

But Jesus chose to love her, and He was kind to her.

Saying kind words is another great way you can love like Jesus. We can say, “thank you” when someone helps us. We can tell someone they look nice today or make them laugh. Saying kind words can really make someone feel loved.

We can love like Jesus when we help, when we share, and when we say kind words. When can we start? RIGHT NOW! So, start your engines and let’s go, go, go and do the number one thing—LOVE like Jesus.

Bible Paraphrase: “Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12, NIV

Text Truth: When you love like Jesus, you can love everyone.

Family Devotional

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
—John 13:34-35

Our Bible story was about how Jesus loves everyone in the whole, wide world. That means, no matter where we go in the world, we can love others the way Jesus loves us by helping, sharing, and saying kind words. Our Bible verse will help us remember that no matter where we are, we can love each other the way Jesus loves us.

“Love each other as I have loved you.” —John 15:12, NIV

Helping others is one way we can love the way Jesus loves us. So, with your family, make a list of ways you can help people.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, let God know that Jesus is the best friend anyone will ever have. And that Jesus really wants to help, share, and say kind words to everyone in the whole, wide world! That is real love! Let God know know that you want to love like Jesus. Ask God to help (read your family's list) so people everywhere will know that you love them the way Jesus loves you. Thank God for His love and tell God that you love Him, too. Close your prayer, "In Jesus' name, amen."
