Palm Sunday

Matthew 21:1-16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Our story is about Palm Sunday. It all started outside the town of Jerusalem when people found out that Jesus was on His way to their town!

The people were so excited! They had heard that Jesus could do amazing things, and they wanted to see Him.

The people wanted to show that Jesus was special, so they took off their coats and laid them down on the ground, in front of Jesus on the path. And they got branches off the palm trees and waved them in the air.

When Jesus came through town, the people waved their palm branches and shouted, “Hosanna, Hosanna!”

Palm Sunday is a special day where we celebrate Jesus. But you don’t have to have a palm branch, and you don’t have to lay your coats on the ground to celebrate Jesus. We can sing to Jesus. We can dance! We can pray! We can yell, “Yay, Jesus!” every day.

The best thing we can do to celebrate Jesus is to love like Jesus. So, start your engines, friends. And let’s go, go, go and love like Jesus!

Bible Paraphrase: “Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12, NIV

Text Truth: We can celebrate Jesus.

Family Devotional

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
—Matthew 21:8-9

Before Jesus left, He said that if we love Him, we will go and love others the same way He loves us. That’s why we’ve been learning this Bible verse.

“Love each other as I have loved you.” —John 15:12, NIV

That is Jesus talking to you and me. The best way we can celebrate Jesus is by doing what He said and love others the way Jesus loves us.

We have talked about a lot of different ways we can love like Jesus. We can help people. We can share what we have with people. And we can say kind words to people. When we do these things, we are celebrating Jesus!

With your family, make a list of ways you will love like Jesus. You could write the name of someone you will help. You could write something that you will share. Or you could write the name of someone you will say kind words to.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, tell God that you want to celebrate Jesus every day by doing what Jesus told you to do and love people the way He loves you. Ask God to help (name of family member) to (what the family member listed) and...(continue to list each family member and ask God for help with how they will love like Jesus). Thank God for His love and tell God that you love Him. Close your prayer, "In Jesus' name, amen."
