Moses’ Mom
Exodus 1:22–2:10
Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.
We begin with a very special baby. This very special baby was named Moses.
Moses had a mother who loved him very much and a sister named Miriam. Moses’ mother, and his sister Miriam, loved him very much.
But a very mean king wanted to get rid of all the baby boys in God’s family.
Moses’ mom wanted to protect her precious baby. She knew that God was always with her and would always be with baby Moses. That helped her be brave.
So, she and Miriam went down to the river and hid Moses in a basket in the tall grass. Then Miriam hid to watch and see what would happen. Do you think someone found baby Moses?
Someone DID find Moses! Do you know who it was? A princess. Do you think the princess helped baby Moses?
Yes! The princess found baby Moses and decided to bring him home! But she needed someone to help her take care of the baby.
You’ll never guess what happened. Miriam came out from behind the tall grass and told the princess that she knew someone who could help take care of the baby.
It was Moses’ own mom. Moses’ mom took care of him. Isn’t that amazing? God was with her the whole time.
Do you know what? No matter where you go or what you do, God is with you, too! God is always with us.
Bible Paraphrase: We have the Lord our God to help us. —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT
Text Truth: God is with me so I can be brave.
Family Devotional
Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.
Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”
“Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother.
—Exodus 1:22–2:10
Our Bible story was about how God was always with Moses, even when his mom hid him in the tall grass. Moses’ mom couldn’t see God, but she believed that God was always with her and that God would always be with her baby, Moses. That is what helped her be brave enough to safely hide Moses in the tall grass. Was God with Moses in the tall grass? Yes, He was!
God is always with us because God loves us. God loves you, and God loves me!
We have the Lord our God to help us. —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT
Moses’ mom was brave because she knew God was always with her and always with Moses. So, with your family, make a list of things you need to be brave to do. Maybe you need to be brave to sleep in the dark, or maybe you need to be brave to go to the dentist. Sometimes we have to be brave to talk to a new friend. God is always with us and will help us be brave.
Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You are so amazing and wonderful. There is no one else like You. Thank You for loving us and always being with us. Thank You for helping us be brave so we can (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
