David Protects Sheep

1 Samuel 17:34-37

Our true story comes from the Bible. It is found in a part of the Bible called First Samuel (1 Samuel). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after a man named Samuel.

Our true Bible story is about someone who did a really big thing! His name was David.

David was a shepherd who took care of his father’s sheep. David made sure the sheep had green grass to eat and clean water to drink. He watched over them and kept them safe.

But one day, while the sheep were asleep, a BIG lion came near them. The lion snuck up to the sheep and took one away in his mouth. OH, NO! What do you think David did?

David stood up! He knew he needed to rescue the sheep, but that was a big job. He was far away in a really big field all alone. But David knew he wasn’t really alone. God was with him and made him to do big things. That gave David the courage to save the sheep. God helped David be strong and brave. David ran to the lion and saved the sheep!

The Bible teaches us that we can be strong and courageous because God is with us. God was with David, and God made David to do big things like saving the sheep.

God is with us, and He made us to do big things, too. He is with us at the park, on the playground, at night when we go to sleep. No matter where we are, we can remember that God is with us and made us to do big things.

Bible Paraphrase: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you. Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: God made me to do big things anywhere.

Family Devotional

But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.”1 Samuel 17:34-37

Our Bible story was about how God made David to do big things anywhere, even taking care of sheep out in a field. It didn’t matter that David was in a field and no one was watching. God still had big things for him to do, like saving his sheep from a hungry lion! Yikes!

God made you to do big things anywhere, too. It doesn’t matter where you are. God can use you to do big things!

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you. —Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

You go to a lot of places: church, school, the grocery store, the park, your grandparents’ house, your bedroom. You go to cities and beaches, mountains and deserts. Sometimes you even fly in an airplane! And the good news is, God made you to do big things, anywhere! And because God made you to do big things anywhere, make a list, with your family, of places you go.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You are such a good, good God. You are so wise and powerful. There is no one more SUPER than You! Thank You for making us to do big things anywhere, like at (read the list your family made.) Help us listen to You and do what You say. You are the best, God, and we love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
