House on a Rock

Matthew 7:24-27

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Jesus sometimes taught people using special teaching stories called parables. Jesus often told stories to teach us important things!

This story Jesus told was about two men who each decided to build a house. One wanted to build on the sand. And one wanted to build on rock. If you had to choose where you wanted to build your house, would you build it on the sand or on the rock? Well, the two men went forward with their plans, and they each built a house. Both houses looked great and everything was fine until . . . until it started raining!

And it rained harder and harder. Oh no! It rained so hard. Do you know what happened to the house on the sand?

It fell right down! The water washed the sand away and the house fell down.

But guess what happened to the house built on the rock? Nothing! It stood strong. The water couldn’t wash the rock away.

Jesus told this story because He wanted to teach us how to live and be strong like the house built on rock!

We can live like Jesus when we love everyone like God loves us! We can treat everyone like they are important to God because they ARE! We can share. And we can help everyone. This is how we can live like our house is built on a rock. Just like Jesus teaches us to do.

Bible Paraphrase: The crowds were amazed at his teaching. Matthew 7:28, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus teaches us how to live.

Family Devotional

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
—Matthew 7:24-27

Our Bible story was another story Jesus told. In this story, Jesus said a wise man builds his house on a rock because rocks are strong. When it rains and storms, the house stands strong because it’s on a strong rock.

Jesus told this story to teach us how to live. When we remember that God loves us, no matter what, that we’re important to God, and we choose to share our stuff and help everyone, it’s like building a house on a rock. When hard things happen, we can stand strong!

Where can we read the stories that Jesus told? The Bible! Jesus teaches us lots of important things in the Bible.

The crowds were amazed at his teaching. —Matthew 7:28, NIV

With your family, make a list of some of the important things Jesus teaches us, like sharing, helping, that God loves us, and that we are important to God. Then, when you pray, you can use your list to thank Jesus for teaching you important things!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to be our friend forever and teach us important things like (read the list your family made). Help us remember the things Jesus teaches us and do what He says. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
