The Angel and Mary

Luke 1:26-33, 38, 46-49

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

This is the true story of Christmas! Do you give and get gifts at Christmas? Yes? Me, too! Since we give gifts at Christmas, let’s play a little game. I’ll give you the name of two gifts, and you tell me which gift you would rather get.

Okay, which gift would you rather get? A teddy bear or fluffy bunny slippers? Both of these are super fun gifts! Let’s try another one.

Which gift would you rather get? A train or a soccer ball? Yes, it’s hard to choose because they are both so cool!

Now, let’s think about gifts for a minute. Why do you think we give gifts at Christmas? Is it to show someone we love them? Yes! Giving gifts is a great way to show someone you love them. And that is why God gave us the BEST gift EVER. You see, God loves you and me so much that He gave us the most special gift EVER! And that is what the true story of Christmas is all about.

Our story begins a long, long time ago when God sent an angel to a girl named Mary.

God sent the angel to tell Mary the good news about a very special gift He wanted to give the whole world

Now when Mary first saw the angel, she was afraid.

But the angel told Mary, “Do not be afraid, Mary.” God wanted her to know that she would have a baby. And the angel told her to name the baby “Jesus.” Jesus would be so special because . . . Jesus is God's Son!

When Mary heard this special news, she told the angel that she would do whatever God wanted her to do. Wow! An angel told Mary that God was giving us a very special gift—JESUS! And Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son!

Bible Paraphrase: God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son—John 3:16, GNT

Text Truth: God told Mary she would have His Son, Jesus.

Family Devotional

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” —Luke 1:29-33

In our Bible story, we heard the beginning of the true story of Christmas. There was an angel and a girl named Mary. What did the angel tell Mary? Yes, the angel told Mary she would have a special baby named Jesus. Why is Jesus special?” Jesus is God’s Son!

God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. —John 3:16, GNT

With your family, make a list of good things people have told you. Like someone may have told you that you were going on a fun trip, or someone told you that a friend was coming over to play, or maybe someone told you that you were having ice cream after dinner. Yum! Remember to write don each family member’s name next to their good thing.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for good things like (read the list your family made). Most of all, thank You for the good news that You love us so much You gave us Your Son, Jesus. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
