Mary and Martha
Luke 10:38-42
Jesus and His friends, the disciples, walked to different towns because Jesus loved people and wanted to teach them about God and how to love one another. One day, Jesus visited a town where two sisters lived. Their names were Mary and Martha.
Mary and Martha both loved Jesus, and Jesus loved them! Martha was SO excited to see Jesus that she invited Him to come to their house.
As soon as Jesus got to Mary and Martha’s house, Mary sat right down at His feet.
Mary knew that Jesus would say important things, so she wanted to hear everything Jesus had to say. Mary wanted to spend as much time as she could with Jesus.
But Martha didn’t sit down with Jesus. Martha got busy. Very, very busy. She was cooking and cleaning. You see, Martha was trying to make everything perfect for Jesus’ visit. So, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, Martha was busy, busy, busy doing things around the house.
Finally, Martha went to Jesus and said, “Make my sister help me. I’m doing all the work!”
But Jesus told Martha that spending time with Him is the best thing to do. Martha didn’t need to be worried about the cooking and cleaning. Jesus wanted to spend time with her.
Wow! Jesus came to spend time with them. He didn’t need everything to be perfect in Mary and Martha’s house. Jesus wanted to spend time with them. Guess what, friends? Jesus loves you and wants to spend time with you! Jesus loves you and wants to be your friend forever.
Bible Verse: How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. —Ephesians 3:18, NIV
Text Truth: Jesus loves me and wants to spend time with me.
Family Devotional
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” —Luke 10:41-42
In our Bible story, we learned that Jesus wants to spend time with us as He did with Mary and Martha because Jesus loves us! Jesus loves you, and Jesus loves me!
How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. —Ephesians 3:18, NIV
Jesus wants us to stop and spend time with Him because Jesus loves us. And since Jesus is always with us, we can spend time with Jesus anywhere! So, with your family, make a list of your favorite places, then you can thank Jesus that you can spend time with Him anywhere! Have each family member write the name of their favorite place. And be sure to write down the name of the family member next to their favorite place.
Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You that Jesus wants to spend time with (name each family member). Help us stop, listen, and spend time with Jesus at the (read the list your family made). It’s so wonderful that we can spend time with Jesus anywhere because Jesus is always with us! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
