Rahab and the Spies

Joshua 2:1-24, 6:24-25

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Joshua. Joshua was a great leader of God’s people, with God’s help.

We begin in a city called Jericho! Now, there was a leader named Joshua who was the leader of God’s army!

Joshua sent two spies to explore the city of Jericho. Joshua told the spies to check out the city.

So, they did!

Inside the city, lived a woman named Rahab. Rahab had heard how powerful God is! She believed in the great things God had done. And that made her strong and courageous! Believing how powerful God is made Rahab brave.

Rahab let the spies in her house because so many soldiers in the city were looking for them. If the soldiers knew that Rahab was hiding the spies, she would be in big trouble!

But Rahab knew that the spies were friends of God, so she wanted to help them.

Then when it was time for the spies to leave, Rahab was brave again and helped them safely get out of the city.

As the spies were leaving, they told Rahab to hang a red rope outside her window. When God’s army came to the city, they would make sure Rahab and her family were safe.

Later, when Joshua and God’s army went to the city of Jericho, they saw the red rope and they remembered Rahab! God’s army made sure Rahab and her family were safe.

God helped Rahab be brave and courageous, and God can help you be brave, too! So, remember: Who can help you be brave? God can help you be brave!

Bible Paraphrase: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you.” Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: I can be brave because God is powerful.

Family Devotional

The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.”
—Joshua 2:2-5

In our Bible story, Rahab did something very brave. Do you remember what brave thing Rahab did? Rahab hid the two spies, then helped them get safely away. Who made Rahab so brave? God helped Rahab be brave! Rahab had heard about the powerful things God had done, and it made her want to help God’s people.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you.
—Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Knowing about the powerful things God had done helped Rahab be brave. So, with your family, get a piece of paper and make a list of some of the powerful things God has done! Have each family member write down one powerful thing God has done. And be sure to have them write their name next to the powerful thing they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, no one is more powerful than You! Only You can (read the list your family made). When we remember all of the powerful things You have done, and that You are always with us, You can help us be brave. Please help (name each family member) remember You the next time they need to be brave. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
