The Angel and Mary

Luke 1:26-33, 38

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin with a young girl named Mary. God had an important message for Mary.

How do you think God gave Mary the important message? Did God give Mary the important message by sending a letter?

No! Did God call Mary on the phone?

No, God gave Mary an important message by sending an angel! The angel gave Mary a VERY important message.

Mary was surprised and a little afraid when she saw the angel. But the angel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary! God says you are going to have a baby and you will call Him Jesus.” WOW! That IS a very important message!

Mary was going to have a baby! And not just any baby. Mary was going to have Jesus! Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son!

Hooray for Jesus! God loves us SO much that God gave us His Son, Jesus. That is A LOT of love! How do we know God loves us? Say, “God gave us Jesus!”

Bible Paraphrase: God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son—John 3:16, GNT

Text Truth: God tells Mary she is going to have His Son, Jesus.

Family Devotional

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” —Luke 1:29-33

In our Bible story, God sent an angel to tell Mary that she would have His Son, Jesus. That’s how God gave Jesus to the world! Our Bible verse talks about how God gave Jesus to the world.

God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. —John 3:16, GNT

God gave us Jesus because God loves us. How do we know God loves us? God gave us Jesus! And Jesus is the best gift EVER! So, with your family, get a piece of paper and make a list of gifts you can give people to show them you love them. Have each family member write down a gift. And be sure to write down the name of each family member next to their gift.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for loving us so much that You gave us Jesus. Thank You for Christmas so we can celebrate Jesus by giving each other gifts like (read the list your family made). Help us show people we love them the way You show people You love them. You’re the best, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
