Great Commission

Matthew 28:18-20

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin on a mountain with Jesus and His friends, the disciples. While they were on a mountain, Jesus gave them a very important job to do.

What do you think the important job was? Do you think Jesus told them to be a firefighter? Do you think Jesus told them to be a doctor? Do you think Jesus told them to be carpenters?

All of those are very important jobs, but Jesus had one important job that was for EVERYONE who follows Him. The important job Jesus told EVERYONE who follows Him to do is . . . GO and TELL! Jesus told them to go and tell everyone, everywhere that Jesus is alive AND Jesus wants to be their friend forever!

Wow! That IS a very important job! And that job is for you and me too. When we do what Jesus says and go and tell people that Jesus is alive, and Jesus wants to be their friend forever, we shine our light! Hold up your index finger and shine your light. Now say, “Jesus is alive, and Jesus wants to be your friend forever!”

Now, let’s think about some people we can go and tell about Jesus. A friend on your soccer team! Tell them, “Jesus is alive, and Jesus wants to be your friend forever!”

A friend at the playground! Tell them, “Jesus is alive, and Jesus wants to be your friend forever!”

Your grandparents! Tell them, “Jesus is alive, and Jesus wants to be your friend forever!”

When we go and tell everyone everywhere that Jesus is alive and Jesus wants to be their friend forever, we’re doing what Jesus says. And when we do what Jesus says, we shine our light! So, when someone asks you, “Who can do what Jesus says?”, you can say, “I can do what Jesus says!”

Bible Paraphrase: “Let your light shine.” —Matthew 5:16, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus says to tell others about Him.

Family Devotional

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
—Matthew 28:18-20

In our Bible Story, Jesus said to go and tell everyone everywhere that Jesus is alive and Jesus wants to be their friend forever. You can skip to go and tell. You can run to go and tell. You can even hop to go and tell! The important thing is to do what Jesus says. And remember: Who can do what Jesus says? I can do what Jesus says!

“Let your light shine.” —Matthew 5:16, NIV

With your family, make a list of people you can go tell about Jesus. Have each family member write down the name of someone they can tell about Jesus. And be sure to write that family member’s name next to the name of the person they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You are the BEST! Thank You for giving us Jesus to be our friend forever. Help us to go and tell (read the list your family made) that Jesus is alive and He wants to be their friend forever. We want to do what Jesus says and shine our light! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
