Wedding at Cana

John 2:1-11

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word “Gospel” means “good news!”

We begin at a wedding party where everyone was celebrating a bride and groom.

Lots of their friends were at the wedding party to celebrate. Jesus and His friends, the disciples, were at the wedding party to celebrate. And Mary, Jesus’ mom, was at the wedding party to celebrate too!

There was music and dancing, and there were lots of special food and special wedding drink. All of the people were having so much fun at the wedding, but then there was a big problem! They ran out of special wedding drink! Oh, no!

Well, when Mary, Jesus’ mom, found out, she knew it would make the bride and groom very sad if they knew they had run out of special wedding drink. So, Mary went to Jesus for help. You see, Mary knew that Jesus is God’s Son and Jesus can do anything. Mary told Jesus what happened, and then she told the helpers to do whatever Jesus said.

Jesus told the helpers to fill up six big jars with water.

So, the helpers filled the six jars with water.

Next, Jesus did something amazing! Something only Jesus can do! Jesus told the helpers to dip a cup into the jar of water.

When the helper brought the cup out of the jar, it wasn’t water anymore! It was special wedding drink!

Jesus’ disciples and the helpers were amazed! Jesus did something that no one else can do! Jesus changed the water into special wedding drink! Wow!

Jesus helped Mary, the disciples, and the helpers have joy! Now the helpers could give the bride and groom the special wedding drink, and everyone could continue celebrating the bride and groom!

Jesus gave the people at the wedding joy and Jesus can give us joy too. So, when anyone asks you, “Who gives you joy?” You can say, “Jesus gives me joy!”

Bible Paraphrase: “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” —Luke 2:10, ESV

Text Truth: Jesus helps us have joy.

Family Devotional

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
—John 2:1-11

In our Bible Story, Jesus did something that only He can do. Do you remember what Jesus did? Jesus turned six big jars of water into special wedding drink! Everyone that knew what Jesus did to help them was amazed, and they had so much joy! Jesus can give us joy when He helps us too! When anyone asks you, “Who gives you joy?” You can say, “Jesus gives me joy!”

“I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” —Luke 2:10, ESV

Just like Mary talked to Jesus when she needed help, we can talk to Jesus when we need help too. So, with your family, get a piece of paper and make a list of things you need help with. Have each family member write down one thing they need help with. And make sure they write their name next to their thing.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for giving us Jesus to be our friend forever and help us. Knowing we have Jesus is good news that brings great joy! When we need help with things like (read the list your family made) help (say each family member’s name) talk to You about it so You can help us. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
