We Are the Light
Matthew 5:14-16; Acts 8:26-35
Our true also story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!” Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called Acts, which is short for “the Acts of the Apostles.” An apostle is someone who is sent to teach others about Jesus.
We begin with Jesus, God’s Son.
One day, Jesus was talking to His friends, the disciples, on a mountain. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14, NIrV) You see, when we love like Jesus . . .
. . . we shine bright like a light! Jesus even said, “Don’t hide it!” Jesus wants us to be a bright light for everyone to see!
Now, I want to tell you about a friend of Jesus’ named Philip. Philip let his light shine bright just like Jesus said.
One day, Philip was walking down a road and saw a man sitting in a chariot.
The man was reading God’s words . . .
. . . but the man needed help understanding what he was reading.
So, Philip sat with the man . . .
. . . and Philip helped him understand God’s words about Jesus and how Jesus had come to be his friend forever. Wow!
Philip chose to shine his light, and he helped the man. Philip loved like Jesus, and we can love like Jesus too.
So, when someone asks you, “Who can love like Jesus?” You can say, “I can love like Jesus!”
Bible Verse: You are the light of the world. —Matthew 5:14, NIrV
Text Truth: I am a light when I love like Jesus.
Family Devotional
The Spirit said to Philip, “Go near, and join yourself to this chariot.”
Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
He said, “How can I, unless someone explains it to me?” He begged Philip to come up and sit with him. —Acts 8:29-31
In our Bible Story today, Philip let his light shine bright just like Jesus said. Do you remember what Philip did? Philip sat with the man and helped him understand God’s words about Jesus. Philip shined his light and helped the man. Philip loved like Jesus! So, when someone asks you, “Who can love like Jesus?” You can say, “I can love like Jesus!”
You are the light of the world. —Matthew 5:14, NIrV
Philip loved like Jesus by helping the man in the chariot. So, with your family, get a piece of paper and make a list of people you can help. Have each member of your family write down the name of one person they can help. And make sure they write their own name next to the name of the person they can help.
Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, we want to be a light and love like Jesus. Help us love like Jesus by helping (read the list your family made). We want everyone to know that Jesus loves them and that Jesus wants to be their friend forever! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
