Jesus Is Born

Luke 2:1-7

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

One day, an angel told Mary that she was going to have a special baby named Jesus. Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son!

Not long after the angel visited Mary, Mary and Joseph traveled a long way to the town of Bethlehem. How do you think Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem? Let’s play a game to find out!

Do you think Mary and Joseph rode on a bus to Bethlehem? No, they didn’t ride on a bus.

Do you think Mary and Joseph rode on an airplane to Bethlehem? No, they didn’t ride on an airplane either.

Do you think Mary and Joseph rode on a donkey to Bethlehem?

Yes! Mary and Joseph traveled a long way to Bethlehem, and they walked and maybe even rode a donkey! “Hee-haw! Hee-haw!"

When Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem, they needed to find a place to stay.

Did Mary and Joseph stay in a hotel? No, Mary and Joseph did not stay in a hotel.

Oooh . . . what about a castle? Do you think Mary and Joseph stayed in a castle? No, Mary and Joseph did not stay in a castle.

Mary and Joseph stayed in a place where animals slept.

Can you make a sound like a cow? “Moo! Moo!”

Can you make a sound like a sheep? “Baa! Baa!”

While Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem, something very, very, VERY special happened! God’s Son, Jesus, was born!

Mary took baby Jesus in her arms, wrapped Him in strips of cloth, and laid Him in a manger.

Jesus is so special because Jesus is God’s Son. This is the true story of Christmas. So, when anyone asks you, “Why is Jesus special?” You can tell them, “Jesus is God’s Son!”

Bible Verse: God has given a son to us. —Isaiah 9:6, NCV

Text Truth: Jesus is born to show the world that God loves us.

Family Devotional

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. —Luke 2:4-7

In our Bible Story, Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. Do you remember what happened when they got to Bethlehem? Baby Jesus was born! Where did Mary lay baby Jesus? Mary made a baby bed out of a manger, and that is where Mary laid baby Jesus. Christmas is when we celebrate that Jesus was born! Jesus is special and He deserves a special birthday, because Jesus is God’s Son! So, when anyone asks you, “Why is Jesus special?” You can tell them, “Jesus is God’s Son!”

God has given a son to us. —Isaiah 9:6, NCV

Christmas is when we celebrate Jesus’ birthday. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and write down all of your birthdays. First, write down the day we celebrate for Jesus: December 25. Then, have each member of your family write down their birthday. And make sure they write their name next to their birthday.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You that (say each family member’s name) was born and that we can celebrate each of them on their birthday. Thank You that Jesus was born. Help us remember that Christmas is all about celebrating Jesus’ birthday. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
