Jesus Helps at a Wedding

John 2:1-11

Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

One day, Jesus went to a wedding with His mother, His disciples, and many other people.

Everyone was happy. They were celebrating a very special day.

After a while, the family had a problem.

They ran out of wine for the celebration.

Jesus' mother, Mary, told Jesus what had happened.

Mary trusted Jesus.

She said to the servants, "Do whatever He tells you."

Jesus saw six large stone jars nearby.

He told the servants to fill the jars with water.

The servants did exactly what Jesus said.

Then Jesus told them to take some of the water to the man in charge of the wedding feast.

When the man tasted it, something wonderful had happened!

The water had become wine.

The family was no longer worried.

Everyone continued celebrating with joy.

Jesus had quietly helped the family.

This was the first wonderful miracle Jesus did.

It showed that Jesus has God's power and that He cares for people.

Key Takeaway for Preschoolers

Jesus cares for people, and we can trust Him to help us.

Dear God,

Thank You for loving us. Thank You for Jesus, who cares for people and helps them. Help us trust Jesus and remember that He is always with us. Help us be kind and caring to others every day. We love You, God.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse: “With God all things are possible.” — Matthew 19:26b, BSB

Paraphrase: “God can do anything.”

Activities

These activities help preschoolers engage with the story through movement, crafts, music, and storytelling, making the lesson fun and memorable.

1. Fill the Jars

Objective: To help children remember that the servants obeyed Jesus.

Materials: Six plastic cups or small containers, a pitcher of water (or pretend water), towel for spills

Activity: Arrange six cups to represent the stone water jars. Invite each child to help "fill the jars" by carefully pouring water into them. Explain that the servants listened to Jesus and did exactly what He told them to do.

Talk About It: "Why did the servants do what Jesus told them to do? How can we listen to Jesus?"

2. Wedding Celebration Craft

Objective: To remind children that Jesus brought joy to the wedding.

Materials: Construction paper, crayons or markers, stickers, optional paper hearts or flower stickers

Activity: Have each child decorate a colorful "wedding celebration" picture with happy people, flowers, or hearts. Encourage them to draw Jesus at the wedding helping the family.

Talk About It: "How did Jesus help the family at the wedding? How does Jesus help us?"

3. "Jesus Helps People" Song (Musical Activity)

Tune: The Farmer in the Dell (Public Domain)

Objective: To reinforce that Jesus cares for and helps people.

Materials: None

Activity: Teach the song and invite children to clap gently or march in place while singing.

Song Lyrics:

        Jesus helps us all,
        Jesus helps us all,
He loves and cares for everyone,
        Jesus helps us all.

        We'll trust Him every day,
        We'll trust Him every day,
Jesus loves and cares for us,
        We'll trust Him every day.

Talk About It: "Who helps us because He loves us? How can we trust Jesus?"

4. Helping Hands Game

Objective: To encourage children to practice helping others.

Materials: A few simple classroom items (blocks, books, stuffed animals, crayons)

Activity: Place a few items around the room that need to be put away or organized. Invite the children to work together to help tidy the room or help a friend complete a simple task. Explain that just as Jesus helped the family at the wedding, we can help people every day.

Talk About It: "What are some ways we can help our family and friends? How does helping others show Jesus' love?"
