Jesus Healed a Blind Man at Bethsaida

Matthew 9:35-36; Mark 8:22-25; Acts 10:38

Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part of the Bible called Mark. Part of our story is from the part of the Bible called Matthew.

The Bible tells us about Jesus. It tells us Jesus went to many towns and villages.

Jesus taught about God and His love. He taught the people how to love each other.

Jesus forgave the people for the wrong things they had done.

Jesus also helped people by making them well when they were sick. Jesus cared for people who needed His help.

One day, Jesus walked to a town called Bethsaida. A man who was blind lived there. The man couldn't see anything. He couldn't see any people. He couldn't see his house. He couldn't even see sunshine. Everywhere he looked, all he could see was darkness. The man probably used his fingers to touch what was around him and his ears to hear all the sounds.

The blind man had some friends who brought him to meet Jesus. The friends asked Jesus to help the blind man. Jesus cared that the man needed help. Jesus took the man by the hand.

Together Jesus and the man walked outside the town. Jesus spit on the man's eyes and put His hands on him.

"Can you see anything?" Jesus asked the blind man.

"I see people," the man replied. "They look like trees walking around!"

Jesus touched the man's eyes again.

This time, the man could see everything clearly!

Jesus healed the blind man. Jesus cared enough to help the man see. Jesus did good things wherever He went. Jesus cares when we need help too.

Bible Paraphrase: [Jesus] went around doing good. (...how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Acts 10:38 NIV)

Text Truth: Jesus cares when we need help.

Family Devotional

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
– Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus cares for you just as much as He did the multitudes of people He ministered to while on earth. He says if we are tired from carrying heavy burdens, we can find rest in Him. And His load is light.

Take a few moments to think of specific ways Jesus has helped you in various parts of your life such as your health, family, friendships, job, finances, and spiritual growth.

Talk to God about each thing. Praise God for caring for you. Then, turn any burdens you may currently have over to God. Trust in His care to help you through those times too.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Jesus Did Good Things

Teach your child these words to the tune "Good Night, Ladies."

Jesus grew up,
Jesus grew up,
Jesus grew up,
He grew and became strong.

He helped others,
He helped others,
He helped others,
Oh, Jesus did good things.

Bible Rhyme

Teach your child this Bible rhyme and motions to help them remember the Bible phrase.

Jesus went around doing good.
(March in place.)
He taught His friends how to pray.
(Fold hands.)
Jesus made people feel well again.
(Reach overhead and stretch.)
He forgave them and helped them obey.
(Hold hands out in front of you, palms up.)

I Spy and Celebrate

Sit together in a cozy chair to play I Spy. Celebrate each thing you find just as the man who was blind might have celebrated what he could see.

A Bandage Picture

Let your child make a picture using a few bandages and markers. We use bandages to help heal our hurt places. Talk about the picture together and ways Jesus cares for us when we need help.

Make a Meal Together

Choose any snack or meal this week your child can help make. As you work together, talk about how you care when your child needs help and that Jesus cares whenever any of us need help.

Closed Eyes

Have your child close her eyes as you tell the story. Then touch her eyes, just like Jesus touched the man's eyes, and have her open her eyes. Switch roles so she can touch your eyes, too.

Bandage Prayer Poster

Make a prayer poster with bandages. Write or draw a word or two on each bandage about something your family needs help with. Pray about these things throughout the week and watch for Jesus' care.
