Jesus Forgave

Luke 7:36-50

Our story comes from the Bible. It is in a part, or book, of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wrote about Him so that others could know Jesus and love Jesus, too.

The Bible tells us that many different people followed Jesus wherever He went. Some of the people were poor and had no money. Some of the people were rich and had a lot of things. But Jesus loved all of them.

One day, an important man named Simon asked Jesus to have dinner with him. Jesus went to Simon's house. He sat down to eat at the table.

A certain woman lived in the same town as Simon. She had done some bad things. When the woman found out that Jesus was eating at Simon's house, she went to see Jesus. Simon was not happy that the woman came. He did not like the bad things the woman had done.

But the woman was sorry for the bad things she had done. She wanted to show Jesus how sorry she was for doing wrong.

The woman began to cry, and her tears fell on Jesus' feet. The woman wiped Jesus' feet with her long hair. Then she kissed His feet and poured a special bottle of perfume on them. Her perfume was the best gift she could give.

Simon grumbled to himself, "Doesn't Jesus know what a bad person this woman is?"

Jesus knew what Simon was thinking. He told Simon a story to help him understand that when a person is sorry for doing wrong and is forgiven, the person wants to show it.

Jesus turned to look at the woman while He talked to Simon. Jesus said, "Simon, you asked Me to come for dinner, but you didn't give Me water to wash My feet. Guests usually have their feet washed. This woman washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give Me a kiss of welcome, but she has given My feet many kisses. You didn't put oil on My head. Yet she poured perfume on My feet. She showed Me that she was sorry for the bad things she had done. Her sins have been forgiven."

Jesus looked at the woman. He told her, "I forgive you. You know who I am, and you knew that I could forgive you. Now you can go home and live God's way."

Jesus forgave the woman when she was sorry for doing bad things. Jesus forgives us when we're sorry, too.

Bible Paraphrase: [Jesus] went around doing good. (...how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Acts 10:38 NIV)

Text Truth: Jesus forgives us when we're sorry.

Family Devotional

To better understand God's forgiveness, do the following exercise. Read Psalm 51. Take a small piece of paper and write down sins that are burdening your life.

Next, take a few moments to consider Psalm 103:12.

...as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
 Psalm 103:12

God has removed believers' sins from us as far as the east is from the west. Praise God that your sins are forgiven.

Finally, tear your paper into tiny pieces and throw the paper pieces into a wastebasket. This is the effect God's forgiveness has on your sins. They are completely forgiven and erased.

You have the privilege of teaching your child that their sins will be forgiven, completely gone, when they are sorry for their sin.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Jesus Told His Friends to Pray

Teach your child these words to the tune "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Jesus told His friends to pray,
To be kind and help each day.
I can learn from Jesus, too,
I can find good things to do.

Bible Rhyme

Teach your child this Bible rhyme and motions to help them remember the Bible phrase.

Jesus went around doing good.
(March in place.)
He taught His friends how to pray.
(Fold hands.)
Jesus made people feel well again.
(Reach overhead and stretch.)
He forgave them and helped them obey.
(Hold hands out in front of you, palms up.)

J-E-S-U-S

Sing this song to the tune of "Bingo." Have your child clap their hands as they spell out J-e-s-u-s.

I know that someone loves me so and Jesus Is His name.
J-E-S-U-S
J-E-S-U-S
J-E-S-U-S
Yes! Jesus loves me so.

I know that He forgives my wrongs when I say I'm sorry.
J-E-S-U-S
J-E-S-U-S
J-E-S-U-S
Yes! Jesus forgives me.

Scratch and Sniff

Cut out or draw perfume bottles on a piece of paper. Mix one tablespoon of warm water and one tablespoon of unsweetened powered drink mix or gelatin. Use different flavors for different colors. Let your child paint the perfume bottles. When the paint dries, your child can scratch the paint to smell the perfume inside the bottle.

Forgiveness at Bedtime

At bedtime, talk about what your child did that he should be sorry for. Assure your child that both you and Jesus forgive him when he's sorry. If you haven't already, ask God's forgiveness.

Stories of Forgiveness

Read stories about a character that's sorry for something and asks for forgiveness. Talk about times when you asked someone to forgive you.

Teach Through Scent

Put some body spray on a cotton ball and let your child smell it. Remind your child how a woman who had done wrong showed Jesus she was sorry. Everything she did was to show she was sorry. Jesus forgave the woman, just as He forgives us when we ask for forgiveness.

Ask Forgiveness

Whenever someone in your family is sorry for something they did wrong, encourage them to stop and ask God for forgiveness. Let your child see that you need Jesus' forgiveness, too.
