King Josiah Finds a Bible

2 Chronicles 34

Our true story comes from the part, or book, of the Bible called Second Chronicles (2 Chronicles). It is the second of two books in the Bible called Chronicles. The word "chronicle" means "written history."

How old must a king be? Would you believe eight? Josiah was eight years old when God made him king of Judah.

Josiah was a pretty awesome king. He believed God’s way was perfect, and he wanted to follow God’s way.

When Josiah had been king for eight years, he sent people to rebuild the big temple, the place where people went to worship God.

The temple was in Jerusalem and it had fallen down. King Josiah knew that rebuilding the temple was important to God, so he made sure it got done!

One day, the workers found something in the temple.

It was a rolled up paper with writing on it—a scroll.

A scroll is a kind of book.

The workers brought the scroll to King Josiah. He read the scroll. It was God’s words—the Bible! It had been lost in the temple for a long time. King Josiah kept reading. He read the whole thing! He learned about God and how much God loves us and how God’s way is perfect.

King Josiah called all the people together. He told the people, “God loves you and His way is perfect!”

Then the king read all God's words to the people. When he was finished, the people cheered! From that day on, King Josiah led the people to go God’s way. Even though he was young, he was the king who helped others follow God. We can help others follow God, too.

Bible Paraphrase: God’s way is perfect. – 2 Samuel 22:31, NIrV

Text Truth: I can help others go God’s way.

Family Devotional

Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. The king stood by his pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, and to obey the words of the covenant written in this book.

Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge themselves to it; the people of Jerusalem did this in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors.
— 2 Chronicles 34:29-32

Josiah helped people go God’s way by letting them know God’s way is perfect. We can do that, too. Ask the members of your family to each think of the name of a person they can help go God's way by telling the person that God's way is perfect.

Pray with your family that God will give you all the courage to help those individuals to go God’s way, the way Josiah helped people go, because God’s way is perfect.
