Jesus Gives You the Power to Be Kind

Luke 10:25-37

Our true story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too.

The Bible tells us many things. It tells us about God’s Son, Jesus. Many people listened to Jesus tell special teaching stories, called parables.

Jesus sold some people a parable about a man.

One day, a man was walking down a road.

Suddenly, some robbers came and took all the man's things and hurt him really, really bad! The robbers ran away and left the hurt man on the side of the road. The hurt man had so many boo-boos, he needed help!

Then a man came walking down the road. He was a priest. Maybe he can help! But the man didn’t stop to help. He just walked on by the hurt man.

Later, another man came walking by. He was a Levite, a member of the tribe of Levi. But that man didn’t stop to help either. He just walked on by the hurt man.

Then, a third man came walking by, but it was a Samaritan. The Samaritan people and the hurt man’s people were not friends. There’s no way the Samaritan man would be kind and help the hurt man.

But the Samaritan man stopped to help the hurt man! He was so kind! He wrapped the hurt man’s boo-boos with bandages, put him on his donkey...

...and then took him to a safe place where he could sleep, eat food, and get all his boo-boos taken care of until he was all better. The Samaritan man was so kind!

By telling this story, Jesus taught that when we see someone who is hurt or sad or mad, we can be kind. And we can be thankful for people who are kind to us.

When you are friends with Jesus, He gives you the power to be kind to everyone. Jesus gives you the power to help when someone is hurt, to give a hug when someone is sad, even help a neighbor. Jesus gives us the power to be kind! Jesus gives you the power to do everything!

Bible Paraphrase: I can do everything by the power of Christ.  Philippians 4:13, NIrV

Family Devotional

"But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'" — Luke 10: 33-35

Our story was about a man we call the Good Samaritan. We call him the Good Samaritan because he did something really good. He was kind and helped a hurt man, even though the hurt man was not his friend.

And because Jesus is alive, when we follow Jesus He gives us the power to be kind to everyone—even people who are not our friend. Jesus really does give us the power to do everything!

I can do everything by the power of Christ. – Philippians 4:13, NIrV

With your family, make a list of ways you can be kind to people even when they're not your friend. Maybe you can share your snack, share your toys, help carry something, or even just smile at them and say something nice.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for sending Jesus to give you the power to be kind. Ask God to help (name of family member) be kind and do things like (read the list). Ask that you will all follow Jesus so you can love others the way Jesus loves you and have the power to be kind. Thank God for Jesus and thank God for His love.
