David Was Thankful

1 Samuel 18:1-4

Our true story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part, of the Bible called First Samuel (1 Samuel). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after a man named Samuel.

Our awesome story is about two good friends named David and Jonathan. Jonathan was the son of the king.

David and Jonathan were such good friends that they did everything together. They ate together. They walked together.

Jonathan was so thankful for his friend, David, that he even gave him his own coat and sword and bow and belt!

What a good friend. David was so thankful that God gave him Jonathan. They loved each other the way we want our friends to love us!

What could we do to show our friends we’re thankful for them? We should share things—like snacks. We could share our toys. And we could share rides on our scooters.

What else could we do? We could use our mouths! We could use our mouths to say kind words! We could say things like, "I like your shirt." Or, "You are so nice!"

We could draw birthday cards. Or we could help pick up toys or give a hug or high five. There are lots of ways we can show our friends we’re thankful for them.

Friends are the best! David and Jonathan were good friends. We have good friends, too. And we can thank God for our friends. We can thank God for everything!

Bible Paraphrase: I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart. – Psalm 111:1, ESV

Text Truth: I can thank God for my friends.

Family Devotional

After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt– 1 Samuel 18:1-4

Our Bible story was about two friends named David and Jonathan. David and Jonathan were best friends. Do you know you can thank God for your friends? It’s true! You can thank God for everything!

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart Psalm 111:1, ESV

With your family, make a list of your friends. Have each member of your family contribute the name of at least one of their best friends.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for your friends. Ready through your list, say the name of each family member and the name of their best friends listed. Acknowledge to God your love for your friends. Thank God for giving them to you. Acknowledge to God your love for Him.
