One Man Was Thankful

Luke 17:11-19

Our true story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too.

Our story begins with ten men who were sick. These men were sick with something called leprosy. They had spots all over their bodies.

A long time ago when people had leprosy they would have to leave the town and their families and live by themselves so they wouldn’t get anyone else sick. Can you imagine having to leave all of your family because you were sick? It was so sad. And no one knew what could make them better, except for Jesus!

One day, these lepers met Jesus. "Jesus!" the men said, "Please make us better! We are sick and no one but You can help!"

Do you think Jesus helped? Yes, He did! Jesus told them to go find the priest in the village. So they went off to see the priest.

And guess what happened. All their spots disappeared! Jesus made them all better!

They all ran home to find their families. Well, all but one! He went back to Jesus, and he said two of the most important words. He said, "Thank You!" They are the two most important words.

The man said, "Thank You," and it made Jesus so happy!  We can do that too. When someone does something nice for us, we can say, "Thank you." And we need to say thank you to God, too. We can thank God for everything!

Bible Paraphrase: I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart. – Psalm 111:1, ESV

Text Truth: I can say thank you.

Family Devotional

Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” – Luke 17:11-19

Our Bible story had the number ten in it. There were ten sick men, and Jesus made them all better. And after they were all better, only one man came back to say thank you. Let's practice telling God thank you every day! He is SO good to us, and we can thank God for everything!

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart Psalm 111:1, ESV

With your family, make a list. Each of you write down one thing—ANYTHING—that you want to thank God for. And include the name of each family member with each thing.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge to God that you are thankful for everything! Read from your list. "[Say a family member's name] wants to thank you for [say that person's thing to be thankful for]" (Repeat for each family member). Acknowledge to God that He is amazing and SO good to you. Ask God's help to always thank Him with your whole heart. Acknowledge to God your love for Him.
