Breakfast on the Beach

John 21:1-14

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus.

Our story is about what happened after Easter. Easter started out sad because Jesus died and was put in a tomb.

But did Jesus stay there? Nooo! Jesus came back, just like He said He would. Jesus is alive!

Not long after that, some of Jesus’ friends were fishing.

While they were fishing, they saw someone standing on the beach. Who do you think it was? Jesus! He was standing on the beach. Jesus is alive! And they were so excited to see Him.

Jesus told His friends to come have breakfast with Him. And they did. Jesus’ friends sat with Him around the fire where He was cooking some fish and bread. Jesus was alive. And He was sitting right there cooking fish! They were so happy to be with their good friend Jesus again. They knew that Jesus loved them and that He would always be their friend—for ever and ever!

Jesus loves YOU, too! Jesus loves you so much, and He wants to be YOUR friend for ever and ever! How awesome is that? Jesus is alive and He wants to be your friend forever.

Bible Paraphrase: “I am alive for ever and ever!” – Revelation 1:18, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus is alive, and He wants to be our friend forever.

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. – John 21:1-14

Our Bible story was about some men who were in a boat fishing. Who did they see on the beach while they were in the boat fishing? Yes! They saw Jesus! And what did Jesus do for His friends when they hurried to see Him? Right again! Jesus made them breakfast on the beach. Jesus wanted His friends to see that He is alive and He wants to be their friend forever.

“I am alive for ever and ever!” – Revelation 1:18, NIV

The men in our story spent time with Jesus on the beach. Now that Jesus is always with us, we can spend time with Him anywhere. With your family, make a list of some of your favorite places.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God that Jesus is alive and you can be with Him everywhere you go. Acknowledge that you can spend time with Jesus at (read through your family's list). Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for him.
