Father and Son

Luke 15:11-24

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too.

The Bible tells us many things. It tells us about God’s Son, Jesus. Many people listened to Jesus tell special teaching stories, called parables.

One day, Jesus told a parable about a dad and a son. The son asked his dad if he could have a LOT of money that his dad was saving for when the son was MUCH older.

The dad gave him the money. Then, the son packed up, took the money, and went far away. Once he’d arrived in this new place, he immediately spent his money on EVERYTHING.

He bought clothes and toys and food. He kept spending his money until it was ALL gone.

All of his money was gone, and he was all alone. He didn’t have a house to live in, or money, or food.

In fact, at one point, he was so hungry that he wanted to eat pig’s food. EWWW!

The son knew he had made bad choices. And he was VERY sorry. He wanted to go back to his dad and tell him how sorry he was.

So, he went back to his dad. When his dad saw him coming, he ran down the road to hug him!

His dad forgave him. He LOVED him. Nothing could ever change that.

And do you know what? God loves you the same way the father in the story loved his son. God will never, ever, ever stop loving you. He loves you no matter what!

Bible Paraphrase: Nothing at all can ever separate us from God’s love. — Romans 8:39, NIrV

Text Truth: God loves me no matter what.

Family Devotional

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.”
— Luke 15:21-24

Jesus told us a story about a father who loved his son, no matter what. Even though the son had gone away and wasted all of his money, the father still loved him and wanted him to come home. Jesus told us this story because He wanted us to know that God loves us no matter what, too. Even when we make silly faces! Nothing can ever separate you from God’s love.

Nothing at all can ever separate us from God’s love. — Romans 8:39, NIrV

We are going to thank God for loving us, no matter what. With your family, write down the names of the people in your family. Then, write down the name of your friends. Then write down the names of your neighbors. Then write down the names of anyone else you can think of. This may be a really big list!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God that no matter what, He loves (read through the names in your list). Acknowledge that you try to do what is right, but that you sometimes mess up. Acknowledge to God that it feels so good to know nothing at all can ever separate us from His love. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for him.
