Great Commission

Matthew 28:16-20

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin with Jesus standing on a mountain. Jesus took His friends up on a mountain after He came back because He had to tell them something very important.

Jesus told them that He had an important job for them to do. Jesus told His friends that He wanted them to tell EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE that Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend forever.

Do you know what? Jesus wants you to do that very important job, too! You can tell people that Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend forever.

You can call a friend and say, “Jesus loves you and wants to be your friend forever.”

You can tell the cashier at the grocery store, “Jesus loves you and wants to be your friend forever.”

Okay, one more. You can tell your friends you play with at the park, “Jesus loves you and wants to be your friend forever.”

That’s the big, important job Jesus gave us to do. We can tell everyone, everywhere that Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend forever.

Bible Paraphrase: How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. —Ephesians 3:18, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus wants to be our friend forever.

Family Devotional

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
—Matthew 28:18-20

Our Bible story was about a very important job Jesus gave all of His friends. He told them to go tell everyone, everywhere that He loves them and wants to be their friend forever. We can go in a boat or on an airplane or just walk to a friend’s house and say, "Jesus loves you, and He wants to be your friend forever."

How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. —Ephesians 3:18, NIV

When we choose to follow Jesus and be His friend forever, we have the important job of telling everyone, everywhere that Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend forever. So, with your family, make a list of people you can go tell that Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend forever.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, tell God you want everyone, everywhere to know that Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend forever. Say, "Please help us go tell (read through your family's list) about Jesus." Close your prayer by saying, "In Jesus' name, amen."
