David and Jonathan

1 Samuel 18:1-4

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Second Samuel (2 Samuel). The man Samuel loved God and told the people what God wanted them to know.

We begin with David. David was a shepherd who took care of sheep.

Then, there was Jonathan. Jonathan was the son of the king and lived in a palace.

David and Jonathan were very good friends. They loved spending time together. They ate together. They walked together. They were good, good friends.

One time, Jonathan was so thankful for his friend, David, that he took off his coat and gave it to him!

Then Jonathan gave David his sword and his bow. He even gave David his belt. Wow! David was so thankful that God gave him Jonathan to be his good friend!

What can WE do to show God we are thankful for? We can share things with them, like our toys.

We can share rides on our scooters.

We can even share food from our garden. We can share things with our friends to show we are thankful.

What else can we do? We can use our mouths to say kind words! We can say things like, "I like your shoes." And, "You are so nice!"

We can use our mouths to say kind things. We can share. What else can we do to show that we are thankful for our friends? We could draw them a picture for their birthday. Or help them clean up. Or give them a fist bump! There are lots of ways we can show God that we are thankful for our friends.

Bible Paraphrase: I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. Psalm 111:1, ESV

Text Truth: I can thank God for my friends.

Family Devotional

And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
—1 Samuel 19:3-4

Our Bible story was about two very good friends named David and Jonathan. Jonathan wanted to show David that he was thankful they were friends. He did it by sharing.

We can show our friends that we are thankful for them, too. We can share our stuff, say kind words, and help our friends when they need it. And every time we share, say kind words, and help others, we are thanking God for our friends, too. You can thank God for your friends, because you can thank God for everything.

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. —Psalm 111:1, ESV

Jonathan was thankful for his friend, David, and David was thankful for his friend, Jonathan. So, with your family make a list of friends you are thankful for. As you write down the names, also write down the name of the family member that gave the name.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Thank You for our friends. Thank You for [family member's name] and their friend, [friend’s name]. Thank You for . . . (continue to name each family member and their friends). And thank You so, SO much that Jesus wants to be our friend forever. Please help us be a good friend by sharing, saying kind words, and helping others. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
