David and Jonathan

1 Samuel 20; 2 Samuel 9

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called First Samuel (1 Samuel) and Second Samuel (2 Samuel). The two books are named after a man named Samuel, who loved God and told people what God wanted them to know.

We are going to learn about FAITHFULNESS. Faithfulness is a big word, right? Faithfulness is doing what you say you will do. It’s like a high-five from a friend that says, “I’m going to be your friend, no matter what!” We begin with two good friends named David and Jonathan.

One day, these two good friends had to say goodbye to each other. It was very hard. They promised to always be friends.

David and Jonathan were such good friends, but then, they had to say goodbye. Later, David became the king, and he remembered his promise that he would always be a good friend to Jonathan.

King David wanted to be FAITHFUL and do what he said he would do. So, King David decided to look for anyone in Jonathan’s family whom he could show kindness to.

Now, this was a BIG job because King David didn’t know where Jonathan’s family was. But King David was FAITHFUL and sent lots of workers to help find Jonathan’s family. And guess what? When the workers came back, they had found someone from Jonathan’s family! It was Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth.

When King David saw Mephibosheth, he knew he needed help because Mephibosheth couldn’t walk. King David chose FAITHFULNESS and had Mephibosheth brought to his house. King David chose FAITHFULNESS and gave Mephibosheth his family’s land back.

King David chose FAITHFULNESS and gave Mephibosheth a place to live. King David chose FAITHFULNESS and gave Mephibosheth people to help take care of him.

And King David chose FAITHFULNESS and let Mephibosheth eat from the king’s table for the rest of his life! King David was FAITHFUL to his friend, Jonathan, and took care of his son. That’s awesome! David chose FAITHFULNESS. And Jesus can help us choose FAITHFULNESS, too, because Jesus can help us do everything!

Bible Verse: Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14:6, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus can help me choose faithfulness.

Family Devotional

When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor.

David said, “Mephibosheth!”

“At your service,” he replied.

“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
—2 Samuel 9:6-7

In our Bible story today, we heard how King David chose faithfulness and was a good friend to Jonathan, just like he said he would be. Jesus can help us choose faithfulness and do what we say we’ll do, too. Jesus can help us do everything!

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” —John 14:6, NIV

With your family, make a list of your friends. Be sure to write down each family member's name by the friend they mention.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, we want to be faithful friends and do what we say we will do. Please help [family member’s name] be a faithful friend to [their friend’s name]. Please help [family member’s name] be a faithful friend to [their friend’s name]. Please help . . . (continue with each family member). You are the best, God, and we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
