Elijah and the Widow

1 Kings 17:7-16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called First Kings (1 Kings). It is the first of two books in the Bible that tell us about the kings of Israel.

We begin with a man named Elijah who was SUPER hungry. Elijah wanted some food. Elijah was so hungry but there was no food anywhere.

God told Elijah to go to a woman that God had chosen, and she would give him food. So, Elijah went to find her! And he did! Elijah went right up to the woman and said, “Can I have a drink of water, please? And a piece of bread? I am very hungry.” But the woman didn’t have any extra food to share with Elijah.

The woman told Elijah she only had enough oil and enough flour to make one more meal for her and her son. Then they would have no more food left.

But Elijah told the woman. “Don’t worry. God will help you and give you all the flour and the oil that you need.” So, the woman went home and she used the flour and the oil to make bread.

First, she poured the flour into a bowl. Then, she poured the oil in, and she mixed the dough together. Knead, knead, knead! Then she put her bread in the oven.

The woman baked her bread in the oven. And when it was done, she served it to Elijah. Elijah said, “Thank you!” And guess what? God did exactly what God said He would do.

Every day, there was more oil and more flour. God helped them just like Elijah said God would. The woman and her son had enough food to eat.

Elijah, the woman, and her son were VERY thankful for the food God gave them. And we can remember to be thankful for our food, whether it is donut day, noodle day, or Taco Tuesday. When we look around and see food, we can say, “God is good.”

Bible Paraphrase: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. — Psalm 107:1, NIV

Text Truth: I can thank God for food.

Family Devotional

Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
—1 Kings 17:13-14

In our Bible story, Elijah, the woman, and her son didn’t have enough food. They were hungry! Who gave Elijah, the woman, and her son enough flour and oil to make bread? God did! God is good!

Give thanks to the LORD for he is good. —Psalm 107:1, NIV

With your family, make a list of your favorite foods. You can use your list when you pray. So, write your family member’s name next to their favorite food.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for food. Thank You for foods like (read the list your family made). Help us remember that we can thank You for our food, every time we eat. You are so good, God, and we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
