Jesus Is Born

Luke 2:1-7

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Our story is about why we celebrate and have parties at Christmas. The true story of Christmas begins with an angel telling Mary that she would have a special baby named Jesus. Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son! God loves us so much that He gave us His Son, Jesus. And our story is about when Jesus was born—His birthday!

One day, Mary and Joseph had to go a long way to a town called Bethlehem. Sometimes, people rode animals when they had to go a long way. Maybe Mary was riding an animal that makes this sound. “Hee-Haw, Hee-Haw!” Yes! That is a donkey!

Mary and Joseph needed an animal like a donkey to get to the town of Bethlehem. When Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem, they needed to find a place to sleep. They were so tired, and it was almost time for Baby Jesus to be born.

Joseph knocked on a door to see if the people had a room for him and Mary. “Knock, knock, knock!” The person said there was no room for them in the house but they could sleep in the stable with the animals.

So, that’s where Mary and Joseph went to sleep, in a stable where the animals stayed. I wonder what kind of animals were in the stable? Maybe there was an animal that makes this sound. “Moo! Moo!” A cow! That’s right!

What animal makes this sound? “Cluck! Cluck! Cluck!” Yes! A chicken!

What about this animal? “Baa! Baa! Baa!” That’s right! It’s a sheep!

Okay, I have one more sound for you. This sound didn’t come from an animal, but it is definitely a sound Mary, Joseph, and all the animals heard that night in the stable. What makes this sound? “Waaa! Waaa! Waaa!” You’re right! That is a baby crying! Baby Jesus was born right in the stable where all the animals were. “Happy birthday, Jesus!”

When Jesus was born, Mary wrapped Him up and put Him in a manger.

Wow! The most special baby in all the world was born! And we know Jesus is special because Jesus is God's Son. And because Jesus was born, we celebrate and have parties at Christmas for His birthday!

Bible Paraphrase: God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son—John 3:16, GNT

Text Truth: Jesus is born.

Family Devotional

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. —Luke 2:4-7

In our Bible story, we heard the story about when Baby Jesus was born. Mary and Joseph knew Jesus was special because Jesus is God’s Son.

God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. —John 3:16, GNT

The day we are born is what we call our birthday. Birthdays are fun because we get to have a party and celebrate! Since our Bible story was about when Jesus was born, do something special for Jesus’ birthday. Get some birthday stickers and share them with your family members. Write “JESUS” in large letters, the middle of a piece of paper. Ask each family member to place a birthday sticker on the paper around the “JESUS” letters.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for Jesus. We are so glad Jesus was born and He wants to be our friend forever. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
