Palm Sunday

Matthew 21:1-11, 15-16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Our true story from the Bible begins in a town called Jerusalem.” One day, the people who lived in Jerusalem found out that Jesus was coming to their town.

What would you do if you found out that Jesus, God’s Son, was coming to your town? Would you jump up and down?  Would you cheer? “Yay, Jesus! Woo hoo! Yay, Jesus!” Would you run to see Jesus? Of course, you would! Because Jesus is SO special! The people in Jerusalem thought Jesus was special, too, so this is what they did.

The people lined up on the street so they could see Jesus. Then they took their coats off and grabbed palm branches and laid them on the ground to make a special path for Jesus to ride on.

Some of the people waved palm branches in the air and cheered for Jesus! The people were ready to celebrate Jesus!

And Jesus rode a donkey on the special path they made for Him, and everyone celebrated. Would you like to celebrate Jesus right now? Stand up. Wave your hands in the air and say, “Hosanna! Hosanna! Yay, Jesus!”

The people in Jerusalem celebrated Jesus a long time ago, and we can still celebrate Jesus today because Jesus is alive!

Bible Paraphrase: “I am alive for ever and ever!” —Revelation 1:18, NIV

Text Truth: We celebrate Jesus because He is special.

Family Devotional

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
—Matthew 21:1-11, 15-16

In our Bible story, Jesus rode into town on a donkey. When the people heard Jesus was coming, they spread coats and tree branches on the road to make a special path for Him. Then they shouted, Hosanna! Hosanna! Yay, Jesus!” The people in our story knew Jesus is special, and so do we!

“I am alive for ever and ever!” —Revelation 1:18, NIV

So, with your family, each of your write down one way you like to celebrate. Like how you celebrate your birthday or Christmas, with party horns, confetti, balloons, or cake. And remember to write down the name of each family member next to the way that they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Jesus is alive, and He wants to be our friend forever. THAT is worth celebrating! We can celebrate with (read the list your family made). Thank You for giving us Jesus! We celebrate Jesus today! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
