Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25-37

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

This is an awesome story that Jesus told about helping others. We all need help sometimes, and the best thing is that God made us to HELP! Make the ASL sign for help. With your dominant hand, make a fist with your thumb up. Place that fist on the palm of your other hand and raise both hands together. God made me and you to help.

Jesus sometimes taught people using special teaching stories called parables. This story Jesus told...

. . .began with a man walking along the road.

Suddenly, some people came and hurt the man. Oh, no! The man had so many boo-boos. He needed help.

Sometime later, a man came walking down the road. Maybe he will help the hurt man. Do you think he will stop and help? But he didn’t stop to help the hurt man. He just walked on by. Oh, no!

But he wasn’t the only person that came down the road that day! Another person came walking by. Maybe he will stop and help. Do you think he will stop and help? Oh no! He didn’t stop to help either. Now, what is the hurt man going to do?

But one more person traveled down that road! But this one was a Samaritan. The Samaritan’s family and the hurt man’s family were not friends. Do you think the Samaritan will stop even though he wasn’t friends with the hurt man? Look! The Samaritan DID stop!

The Samaritan helped the man. He put bandages on his boo-boos. He put the hurt man on his donkey and took him to a place to get better. Hooray for helping!

The Samaritan in the story did what God made us to do! He helped.

And we can help, too! Because God made you and me to help others.

Bible Verse: We have the Lord our God to help us.  2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Text Truth: God made me to help others.

Family Devotional

“But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’”
—Luke 10:33-35

In our Bible story, a man stopped to help a hurt man. He did what God made us to do: help others! Who made you to help others? God made me to help others.

We have the Lord our God to help us.  —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

The Samaritan helped a hurt man by giving him bandages in our Bible story. So, with your family, make a list of ways you can help others. Have each family member write down a way they can help other. And make sure to write down each family member’s name next to the “way” they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for making us to help others. Please help us do things like (read the list the children made). We don’t want to walk by people who need help. We want to do what You made us to do and help others. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
