An Angel Helps Peter Escape from Prison

Acts 12:1-19

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Acts, which is short for “the Acts of the Apostles.” An apostle is someone who is sent to teach others about Jesus.

We begin with some of Jesus’ friends. First, we have Peter. Peter and some of Jesus’ other friends were going around the city telling people the good news about Jesus. They were telling EVERYONE that Jesus wants to be their friend forever! Way to go, Peter!

But the king didn’t like it one bit! King Herod did not like what Peter and Jesus’ friends were saying. So, King Herod sent soldiers to take Peter to jail! Oh, no!

When Peter’s friends saw the soldiers take Peter away, they could have been worried, scared, mad, sad, or frustrated. But Peter’s friends prayed!

Later that night, the most amazing thing happened! While Peter was sleeping, an angel woke him up!

The angel told Peter to follow him.

Peter did what the angel said and followed him safely outside.

After the angel left, Peter went right to his friend’s house and knocked on the door. Knock, knock, knock!

No one answered the door. So, Peter kept knocking. Knock, knock, knock!

Finally, one of Peter’s friends opened the door.

Peter’s friends were amazed to see him standing at the door!

Peter told his friends everything that happened—how an angel helped him and led him safely outside. Jesus was with Peter the whole time!

Wow! Jesus was always with Peter! And Jesus is always with you, too, because Jesus wants to be your friend forever! Who wants to be your friend forever? Jesus wants to be your friend forever!

Bible Verse: Jesus said, “Come follow me.”  Matthew 4:19, NCV

Text Truth: Jesus is always with me.

Family Devotional

Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”

“You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”

But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
—Acts 12:13-17

In our Bible story, Jesus was with Peter in jail and helped him get out. Peter’s friends were so happy to see him again! This story helps us see that Jesus is always with us, no matter where we go! No other friend is like Jesus. Jesus is always with us and wants to be our friend—FOREVER!

Jesus said, “Come follow me.”  —Matthew 4:19, NCV

Jesus is always with us. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of places you go. Have each family member write down one place that they go.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for giving us Jesus to be our friend forever. Thank You that Jesus is always with us. Help us remember that Jesus is with us at (read the list your family made). You’re the best, God, and we love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
