Bigger Barns

Acts 2:45; Luke 12:16-23

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Acts, which is short for “the Acts of the Apostles.” An apostle is someone who is sent to teach others about Jesus. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Our true story from the Bible is an important story that Jesus told.

We being with a farmer. This farmer grew a lot of good food. Like a LOT of food.

And the farmer needed a place to put all that food. Where do you think the farmer put his food? Yes! The farmer needed to put all the food into the barn, but the farmer had so much food that it filled up his barn. And there was still more food!

What should the farmer do with all the extra food? He had an idea! He would build a BIGGER barn! The farmer could fill it up and keep ALL the food for himself. It would be WAY more food than he needed, but he wanted to keep it all. Could the farmer have shared the food? Yes, he could have helped a lot of people!

Jesus told this story to teach us that it is important to share what we have. What can YOU share with others?

You could share a snack.

You could share a toy.

You could share a turn on the swing,

This is the very important thing that Jesus teaches us in this story. God wants us to share. I’m so glad Jesus teaches us important things. So, when someone asks you, “Who teaches you important things?” You can say, “Jesus teaches me important things!”

Bible Paraphrase: The people were amazed at his teaching. —Matthew 7:28, NCV

Text Truth: Jesus teaches us we can share.

Family Devotional

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
—Luke 12:16-19

In our Bible story, Jesus told a story about a man who grew A LOT of food. It was way more food than what the man needed. Did the man share some of his food, or did the man build bigger barns to store all of the food for himself? The man built bigger barns, and he kept all of the food for himself. What could the man have done with some of the food instead of keeping it all for himself? The man could have shared his food with people who needed it! Jesus told this story to teach us something important. We can share! I’m so glad Jesus teaches us important things! Who teaches you important things? Jesus teaches me important things!

The people were amazed at his teaching. —Matthew 7:28, NCV

Jesus teaches us we can share. So, with your family, make a list of things you can share! Have each family member write down something they can share. And make sure each family member writes their name next to the thing they list.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to teach us important things. We want to do the things Jesus teaches us to do, like share. Please help us share things like (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
