The Unloved Woman

John 8:2-11

Our true story is from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the disciples of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin with a woman who was very sad. She had made a lot of bad choices and now no one wanted to be her friend.

Can you imagine not having any friends to do things with?

Nobody to play blocks with?

Nobody to play with at the park?

How would it make you feel to do all those things all by yourself with no friends? It would make me sad. This woman was very sad, too.

One day, Jesus was teaching a lot of people.

Suddenly, some people who didn’t like the woman brought her to Jesus. They said, “Jesus, this woman has done bad things!” Wow! They were definitely not this woman’s friend. And they thought Jesus wouldn’t want to be her friend.

But, wait. We know Jesus is special, and Jesus loves everyone. Do you think Jesus loves this woman and wants to be her friend? Yes! Jesus did love her and wanted to be her friend.

Jesus asked the people, “Have YOU ever done bad things? Have you ever made bad choices? Step forward if YOU ARE PERFECT and have NEVER done anything wrong.”

And do you know what? NO ONE stepped forward. Because NONE of them were PERFECT!

Jesus didn’t punish the woman like the people wanted. Jesus told her to go and make good choices. Jesus was kind and loving to the woman when no one else was.

Do you think Jesus will love us when we make a mistake? Yes! Will Jesus love us no matter what? YES! Jesus will always love us, and Jesus wants to be our friend forever. So, when someone asks you, “Who does Jesus love?” You can say, “Jesus loves everyone!”

Bible Paraphrase: Be kind and loving to each other. —Ephesians 4:32, NCV

Text Truth: Jesus is a friend to everyone.

Family Devotional

Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
– John 8:10-11 NIV

Being a friend is one way we can love people. Jesus is a friend to everyone, because Jesus loves everyone. In our Bible Story, today, Jesus was teaching a crowd of people about God. There was a woman who was very sad. She had made a lot of bad choices and now no one wanted to be her friend. Some people who didn’t like the woman brought her to Jesus and said, “Jesus, this woman has done bad things!” Wow! They were definitely not this woman’s friend. And they thought Jesus wouldn’t want to be her friend. But Jesus did love her and wanted to be her friend. Jesus didn’t punish the woman like the people wanted. Jesus told her to go and make good choices. Jesus was kind and loving to the woman when no one else was. We are being a friend when we are kind and loving too!

Be kind and loving to each other. —Ephesians 4:32, NCV

In our Bible story, we learned that Jesus is a friend to everyone because Jesus loves everyone. So, with your family, get a piece of paper and write down people you can be a friend to. Have each family member write down the name of one person they can be a friend to, like Jesus. And be sure to write the family member’s name next to the name of their person.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to be a friend to everyone. Please help us be a friend, like Jesus, to (read the names your family wrote). Jesus loves everyone, and so should we. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
