The Holy Spirit Comes
Acts 2
Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Acts, which is short for “the Acts of the Apostles.” An apostle is someone who is sent to teach others about Jesus.
After Jesus went back to Heaven, His friends remembered what He told them. He said that God would send the Holy Spirit to help them.
So the disciples stayed together in one place, waiting.
Then one day, something amazing happened!
Suddenly, there was a loud sound—like a strong wind blowing! It filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like little flames of fire above their heads.
God had sent the Holy Spirit!
The disciples began to speak—and something wonderful happened. They were able to speak in different languages! People from many different places were nearby, and they heard the disciples talking.
And guess what?
Everyone could understand!
The people were surprised. They said, “How can this be? We hear them talking in our own languages!”
Then Peter stood up and began to speak. He told everyone about Jesus—how Jesus loves them and how He is alive.
Many people listened. Many people believed. And many people chose to follow Jesus that day.
God had sent the Holy Spirit to help His friends—and now they were telling everyone about Jesus!
Key Takeaway for preschoolers
God helps us tell others about Jesus.
Dear God,
Thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to help us. Thank You that we are not alone. Help us tell others about Jesus. Help us share His love with everyone. We love you, God.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Bible Verse: “You will be My witnesses.” — Acts 1:8, BSB
Paraphrase: We can tell others about Jesus.
Activities
These activities help preschoolers engage with the story through movement, crafts, music, and storytelling, making the lesson fun and memorable.
1. “Mighty Wind” Movement Game
Objective: Help children remember the sound of the rushing wind when the Holy Spirit came.
Materials: None
Activity:
- Have children stand in an open space.
- Tell them, “Let’s pretend we hear the wind!”
- Begin softly by having them gently sway side to side.
- Gradually increase movement—have them wave their arms and make a “whoosh” sound like wind.
- Then slowly quiet down again.
- Repeat the pattern to reinforce the idea of a sudden, powerful sound.
Talk About It: “What did the disciples hear? A strong wind! God sent the Holy Spirit!”
2. “Many Languages” Listening Game
Objective: Help children understand that people heard in their own languages.
Materials: None
Activity:
- Teach children how to say a simple phrase like “Hello” or “Jesus loves you” in a few different ways (you can make up fun sounds or use simple real examples).
- Say one version at a time and have the children repeat it.
- Explain that in the Bible story, people heard the disciples speaking in ways they could understand.
Talk About It: “Did everyone understand? Yes! God helped everyone hear about Jesus!”
3. “Flames of Fire” Craft
Objective: Help children remember the flames that appeared when the Holy Spirit came.
Materials: Red, orange, and yellow paper, Glue sticks, Headbands (paper strips or pre-made bands)
Activity:
- Help children glue flame shapes onto a paper strip to create a simple headband.
- Assist them in placing the headband on their head.
- Explain that the flames remind us of how the Holy Spirit came to help Jesus’ friends.
Talk About It: “What did the disciples see? Flames! God sent the Holy Spirit to help them!”
4. “God Helps Us Tell” Song (Tune: The Muffin Man)
Objective: Reinforce the story through music and repetition.
Materials: None
Activity:
Teach children the following song to the tune of The Muffin Man:
Oh, God helps us, yes He does,
Yes, He does, yes, He does,
Oh, God helps us, yes He does,
To tell of Jesus!
We can tell our friends about,
Friends about, friends about,
We can tell our friends about,
The love of Jesus!
- Encourage children to clap along with the rhythm.
- Have them point outward on “friends” and place hands over their hearts on “love.”
